Ep 6 - Don't Miss Your Assignment

FREE Download: 5 Signs You're Missing Your Assignment

When you’re physically sick, your body usually lets you know. You cough, sneeze, feel tired, or maybe run a fever. And those symptoms tell you something is wrong, so you can act. But sometimes an illness is silent. No symptoms. No signs. No warning.

The same thing can happen in your spiritual life.

A woman can be walking through her day, doing all the “right” things, and still not be living out her God-given assignment – and not even realize it. That’s why today, we’re walking through five signs that might reveal you’re operating outside of the place God has called you to be.

Let’s dive in.

Sign #1: You Feel Unfulfilled in Your Current Career

If your career isn’t resonating with your passions, strengths, or the work God created you to do, you may be functioning outside of your assignment.

Ask yourself:

  • Does your stomach tighten on Sunday night because Monday is coming?
  • When you’re at work, do you daydream about being anywhere else?
  • Are you just pushing yourself from Monday to Friday so you can “escape” on the weekend?

If any of these feel true, your work may be draining the life out of you rather than glorifying God.

Even if your job looks great on paper, it doesn’t mean it’s still your assignment. I remember sitting at my desk as a judge, looking out the window, longing for work that aligned with my gifts, talents, and calling. When fulfillment left, it was a sign that it was time to make a change.

Scripture to Anchor You: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” -Colossians 3:23

If where you are doesn’t feel like where God wants you, ask Him for direction. He will show you the next step.

Sign #2: You’re Not Using Your Unique Gifts and Abilities

God designed each of us differently – on purpose. Your gifts are clues that point directly to your assignment.

Romans 12:6 tells us, “In His grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.”

If your gifts are going unused, chances are you’re out of alignment.

I think about a college student I know who excelled in computer science but whose heart was in dance. Dance was her passion. Her gift. But she chose the “sensible” major. Now, she’s exploring how to honor the gift God entrusted to her.

You can do the same.

If you’re unsure of your gifts:

  1. Take a spiritual gifts test (giftstest.com is a great place to start).
  2. Make a list of everything you can do – no edits, no judgment.
  3. Highlight what you’re especially good at and what others often affirm in you.
  4. Pray and ask God, “How do You want me to use these gifts right now?”

Your gifts are not random; they are intentional tools tied to your assignment.

Sign #3: You’re Stuck in Toxic or Unfulfilling Relationships

A toxic relationship will drain your energy, distort your identity, and distract you from your God-given assignment.

And this isn’t just about romantic relationships. Toxicity can come through:

  • Family members
  • Friends
  • Co-workers
  • Even church relationships

If someone makes you feel small, devalued, or less than the woman God created you to be, that relationship can pull you away from your assignment.

Drama-filled relationships shift your focus from purpose to survival.

Scripture to Remember: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” -1 Corinthians 15:33

A friend once shared how years of abusive marriages consumed her life. Her entire focus became surviving – not thriving, not growing, not living out her assignment. That may be an extreme case, but emotional, mental, or spiritual toxicity can have the same effect.

If a relationship is constantly pulling you away from God or causing turmoil, that’s a sign that something is out of order. Spend time in prayer and ask God what He wants you to do.

Sign #4: You Feel Spiritually Disconnected

When your connection with God feels “off,” everything else feels off too.

Spiritual disconnection may look like:

  • Feeling out of order
  • Losing passion for prayer or the Word
  • Feeling distant from God
  • Going through life on autopilot

And if you’re disconnected from the One who gives you your assignment, you can’t fully walk in it.

Jesus reminds us in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Years ago, during my divorce, I was angry, hurt, frustrated, disappointed… even angry with God. And that anger led me away from Him instead of toward Him. Distance from God creates distance from your assignment.

The solution?

  • Return to prayer
  • Spend time in the Word
  • Seek fellowship
  • Find a spiritual mentor if needed

God is always waiting with open arms to welcome you home.

Sign #5: You’re Suppressing a God-Given Dream

God is the ultimate Dream-Giver.

Often, your dreams are connected to your assignment. When you suppress them, you may be stepping outside God’s will for your life.

Bruce Wilkinson’s book The Dream Giver tells the story of “Ordinary,” who leaves the Land of Familiar to pursue his God-given Big Dream. The message is simple: There is no limit to what God can do when you pursue the dream He planted in your heart.

If you’ve been suppressing a dream, ask yourself why.

Is it fear?

Timing?

Doubt?

Feeling unqualified?

If God gave you the dream, He will bring it to pass; in His timing, not yours.

As I always say: If God said it, He meant it.

You Can Realign Yourself Today

Here are the 5 signs again:

  1. Feeling unfulfilled in your career
  2. Not using your unique gifts
  3. Being in toxic or unfulfilling relationships
  4. Feeling spiritually disconnected
  5. Suppressing a dream

If one or several of these hit home, don’t be discouraged. This isn’t a condemnation. It’s an invitation.

An invitation to:

  • Grow
  • Realign
  • Seek God
  • Courageously step into your assignment

You are on a journey, and at any moment, God can shift you into a season of deeper clarity, stronger alignment, and renewed joy.

When you boldly step into your God-given assignment, you will experience purpose, passion, and the beauty of walking hand-in-hand with the One who made you for such a time as this.
